شعبۂ اُردو — جامعہ ڈھاکہ — Department of Urdu, established 1921
Established in 1921 alongside the founding of the University of Dhaka, the Department of Urdu has grown into one of the oldest and most respected centres of Urdu language and literature study in South Asia. Over the past century, the department has produced generations of scholars, writers, and educators who have shaped Urdu studies both nationally and internationally.
Our vision is to remain a leading centre of excellence for Urdu language, literature, linguistics, and Iqbal studies — fostering critical scholarship, preserving literary heritage, and nurturing the next generation of researchers and educators in a spirit of academic rigor and cultural appreciation.
Facilities supporting teaching & research
The department is housed within the Faculty of Arts and features a dedicated seminar library, a departmental reading room, faculty offices, and a multimedia classroom equipped for both instruction and research. Students and faculty also have access to the wider university library system and archives.
